Die historische Stadt New Market, VA, befindet sich im Herzen des Shenandoah Valley. Die Schlacht von New Market wurde am 15. Mai 1864 während des Bürgerkriegs geschlagen. Eine behelfsmäßige konföderierte Armee von 4.100 Mann, zu der auch Kadetten des Virginia Military Institute (VMI) gehörten, besiegte Unions-Generalmajor Franz Sigel und seine Army of the Shenandoah.
Infolge dieser Niederlage wurde Sigel von seinem Kommando entbunden und durch Generalmajor David Hunter ersetzt, der später das VMI als Vergeltung für New Market niederbrannte. -------------> The historic town of New Market, Virginia is located in Shenandoah Valley.
