"52 Wochen 50 Staaten" - wir starten in Woche 2 mit dem Bundesstaat Alaska.
Im Bundesstaat Alaska gibt es keine Bezirksregierung, was heißt, dass es daher auch kein Amt des Sheriffs gibt. Stattdessen gibt es 16 boroughs, die ähnlich wie counties funktionieren.
Im Jahr 1953 wurde die Alaska „Territorial Police“ gegründet, um die Highway Patrol zu ersetzen, die in ganz Alaska volle Polizeibefugnisse hatte. Das Abzeichen der Territorialpolizei wurde 1953 eingeführt. Das Abzeichen zeigt den Mount McKinley, einen Elch, Wasservögel, einen Eisbären, die Mitternachtssonne und eine Hacke und Schaufel.
Im Jahr 1967 wurde das aktuelle Abzeichen eingeführt und der Wortlaut in „Alaska State 
Troopers“ geändert. Außerhalb der Stadtgrenzen sind die Alaska State Troopers für die Aufrechterhaltung der öffentlichen Sicherheit zuständig. Sie Patrouillen in allen nicht eingemeindeten Gebieten des boroughs und in Gebieten, die nicht von der städtischen Polizei abgedeckt werden. Die Alaska State Troopers sind in ihrer Verfassung für die Zivilprozessordnung, Gerichtssicherheit, den Transport von Gefangenen und für Sorgerechtsanordnungen für psychisch Kranke zuständig.

There is no county government in the state of Alaska, which means there is no sheriff's office. Instead, there are 16 boroughs that function similarly to counties.
In 1953, the Alaska “Territorial Police” was established to replace the Highway Patrol, which had full police powers throughout Alaska. The Territorial Police patch was introduced in 1953 – see illustration. The patch depicts Mount McKinley, a moose, waterfowl, a polar bear, the midnight sun and a pick and shovel.
In 1967, the current patch was introduced and the wording was changed to “Alaska State Troopers” – see illustration. Beyond the city limits, the Alaska State Troopers are responsible for maintaining public safety. They patrol all unincorporated areas of the borough and areas not covered by city police. In its constitution the Alaska State Troopers handle civil papers, court security, prisoner transport and mental health custody orders.

Es gibt 15 Sheriff-Büros im Bundesstaat Arizona. Wir haben mit dem heutigen Tage 212 Arizona County Sheriff Abzeichen in unserer Sammlung.
In Arizona übernimmt das Büro des Sheriffs in der Regel die Strafverfolgung in den nicht eingemeindeten Städten innerhalb der Grenzen des jeweiligen Bezirks, unterhält das Bezirksgefängnis und führt alle Zustellungen für die übergeordneten Gerichte und Haftbefehle im gesamten Bezirk durch.
Sie sind auch verantwortlich für die Durchführung und Koordinierung von Such- und Rettungsaktionen verantwortlich, sowie für die Eintreibung von Steuerrückständen.
Das Maricopa County Sheriff's Office ist das größte Sheriffsbüro in Arizona. 1993 eröffnete der ehemalige Sheriff Joe Arpaio das provisorisches Freiluftgefängnis Tent City in Phoenix. Auf seinem Höhepunkt Ende der 1990er Jahre umfasste es 82 Militärzelte aus der Zeit des Koreakriegs und beherbergte 1.700 Insassen.
Die Häftlinge bekamen rosa Unterwäsche und rosa Handtücher, damit die Häftlinge nicht versuchen würden, diese zu stehlen. Eines dieser rosa Handtücher aus dieser Haftanstalt wird in unserem Museum ausgestellt. Tent City wurde nach zahlreichen Kontroversen und Kritik hinsichtlich der Sicherheit der Insassen und unmenschlichen Lebensbedingungen im Jahre 2017 geschlossen.

There are 15 sheriff departments in the state of Arizona. As of today, we have 212 Arizona county sheriff patches in our collection.
In Arizona the sheriff’s office generally provides law enforcement services in unincorporated towns and cities within the boundaries of their county, maintains the county jail and conducts all serve of process for the superior courts and warrants throughout the county.
They are responsible for the implementation and coordination of search and rescue operations, as well as for the collection of tax delinquencies.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is the largest sheriff’s office in Arizona. In 1993, former Sheriff Joe Arpaio opened the temporary open-air prison Tent City in Phoenix. At its peak in the late 1990s, it comprised 82 military tents from the Korean War era and housed 1,700 inmates.
The prisoners were given pink underwear and pink towels so that the prisoners would not try to steal them. One of these pink towels from this prison is on display in our museum. Tent City was closed in 2017 after numerous controversies and criticism regarding the safety of the inmates and inhumane living conditions.

Es gibt 75 Sheriff Departments im Bundesstaat Arkansas. Mit heutigem Tage haben wir 327 Arkansas County Sheriff Abzeichen in unserer Sammlung.
Zu den Aufgaben eines Sheriffs in Arkansas gehören in der Regel die Strafverfolgung, die Verwaltung der Bezirksgefängnisse und die Bereitstellung von Gerichtsvollziehern für die Bezirks-, Kreis-, und anderen Gerichte des Bezirks. Nach dem Gesetz von Arkansas ist der Sheriff der oberste Vollzugsbeamte des Bezirks. 51 von 76 County-Sheriffs sind auch zuständig für die Steuererhebung. 
Als die Sheriffs anfingen, Abzeichen zu tragen, waren diese noch recht einfach. Die Aufnäher der meisten Sheriff Departments waren ähnlich gestaltet, bis auf den Namen des jeweiligen Bezirks (County). Viele verwendeten das allgemeine Sheriff-Abzeichen von Arkansas mit dem entsprechenden Abzeichen des Bezirks – siehe Conway County. Während sich die Aufnäher im Laufe der Jahrzehnte änderten, blieb ihr Stil im Wesentlichen derselbe. Nur der Name des jeweiligen Bezirkes wurde hinzugefügt.

There are 75 sheriff departments in the state of Arkansas. As of today, we have 327 Arkansas county sheriff patches in our collection.
The duties of an Arkansas sheriff generally include providing law enforcement services, managing county jails and providing bailiffs for the county, district, circuit and other courts within the county. By Arkansas law, the sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the county. 51 of 76 county sheriffs also collect taxes.
When the sheriff’s departments started wearing patches, they were pretty simple. The patches of most sheriff departments were similar in style, except for the name of the respective county. Many used the generic Arkansas sheriff's patch with the county's corresponding tab patch - for example Conway County. As the patches changed over the decades, their style remained essentially the same. Only the respective county name was added.

Im Moment haben wir 578 kalifornische County-Sheriff-Abzeichen in unserer Sammlung.
In Kalifornien ist der gewählte Sheriff in 48 der 58 Bezirke standardmäßig auch der Gerichtsmediziner, der für die Bergung von Verstorbenen in seinem Bezirk und die Durchführung von Autopsien verantwortlich ist. Der Beamte, der für solche Sheriff-Abteilungen zuständig ist, wird in der Regel als Sheriff-Coroner bezeichnet, und Beamte, die diese Funktion für solche Abteilungen ausüben, werden in der Regel als Deputy Sheriff-Coroner oder Deputy Coroner bezeichnet.
In Kalifornien ist der Sheriff auch für Such- und Rettungseinsätze (SAR) zuständig. Sie retten oder bergen Menschen, die sich in der freien Natur verirrt haben, verletzt oder getötet wurden.

As of today, we have 578 California county sheriff patches in our collection.
In California, the elected sheriff is also the coroner by default in 48 of the 58 counties and is charged with recovering deceased persons with their county and conduction autopsies. The official in charge of such sheriff’s departments is typically titled – Sheriff-Coroner – and officers who perform this function for such departments are typically titled deputy Sheriff-Coroner or deputy coroner. .jpg)
In California, the sheriff is also responsible for search and rescue (SAR) operations. They rescue or recover people who are lost, injured or killed in the wild.
In 1953, the California grizzly was named the official state animal and remains one of the state's most enduring and visible symbols to this day. This bear can also be found on numerous sheriff's patches.

There are 63 sheriff's offices in the state of Colorado. As of today, we have 473 Colorado county sheriff patches in our collection.
The sheriff of each county shall, among other duties, serve as the fire protection officer of his respective county and shall be responsible for coordinating fire suppression efforts in the event of prairie, forest, wilderness or wildland fires occurring in the unincorporated area of the county or outside the boundaries of a fire protection district.

Im Dezember 2000, nach mehreren Korruptionsskandalen, wurden alle Sheriffs durch State Judicial Marshals ersetzt, die nicht gewähltes Personal sind.

In December 2000, after several corruption scandals, all sheriffs were replaced by State Judicial Marshals, who are unelected personnel.
Sheriffs have existed in Connecticut since the 1600's. The main duties of sheriffs in Connecticut were to transport prisoners, provide security in courthouses and serve court documents.

In der ersten Verfassung von Delaware aus dem Jahr 1776 wurde der Sheriff zum "Hüter des Friedens“ innerhalb des Bezirks ernannt. Die County Sheriffs und ihre Deputies sind nicht mit der üblichen Strafverfolgung betraut und haben keine Verhaftungsbefugnisse. Sie können jedoch eine Person in Gewahrsam nehmen und transportieren, wenn dies von einem Richter oder Beauftragten des Obersten Gerichts ausdrücklich angeordnet wird.

There are 3 sheriff's offices in the state of Delaware. As of today, we have 5 Delaware county sheriff patches in our collection.
The first constitution of Delaware in 1776 made sheriff a conservator of the peace within the county. The county sheriffs and their deputies do not engage in typical law enforcement and do not have arrest powers. However, sheriffs and deputy sheriffs may take a person into custody and transport them if specifically ordered to do so by a judge or superior court commissioner.
The sheriff is an officer of the court. He is responsible for processing orders of the court system, summoning in quests, jurors and witnesses for the courts; and conduction execution sales against personal and real estate properties and transportation of prisoners.

Die Sheriffs in Florida sind für die Strafverfolgung, den Strafvollzug und das Gerichtswesen in ihrem Bezirk zuständig.
Obwohl jedes Sheriffsbüro eine unabhängige Behörde ist, tragen alle Mitarbeiter die "Sheriff grüne Florida" Uniform mit ähnlichen Brustabzeichen in Form eines fünfzackigen Sterns sowie Schulterabzeichen und fahren Fahrzeuge mit grünem und goldenem Design, so wie in den staatlichen Statuten des Bundesstaat Florida vorgeschrieben, mit Ausnahme von Duval und Miami-Dade. Collier County trägt ebenfalls keine grüne Uniform, sondern eine graue Uniform mit grünen Akzenten.

The sheriff’s offices in Florida are responsible for law enforcement, corrections, and court services within the county.
Although each county sheriff’s office is an independent agency, they all wear the “Florida’s Sheriff Green” uniform with similar badges in the shape of a five-pointed star and patches and drive vehicles with green and gold designs, as prescribed in Florida State Statues, with the exception of Duval and Miami-Dade. Collier County also does not wear green; they wear a grey uniform with green accents.

Mit heutigem Tage haben wir 650 Sheriff-Abzeichen aus Georgia in unserer Sammlung.
Die verfassungsmäßige und gesetzliche Zuständigkeit für das Amt des Sheriffs erstreckt sich auf den ganzen Bundesstaat. Das heißt, wenn jemand in einem Bezirk gegen das Gesetz verstößt und in einen anderen flieht, kann der Sheriff die Straftat überall im Bundesstaat untersuchen, die Verhaftung vornehmen und den Angeklagten in den ursprünglichen Bezirk zurückbringen.
Neben der Strafverfolgung vollstrecken sie alle Gerichtsurteile und -beschlüsse, empfangen, transportieren und inhaftieren Häftlinge für das Gericht, treiben Steuern ein und erfüllen zahlreiche andere Aufgaben.
In Georgia gibt es zwei Behörden, in denen die Polizeibehörde und das örtliche Sheriff-Büro zusammengelegt wurden: Macon-Bibb County Sheriff's Office und das Augusta-Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

There are 159 counties in the state of Georgia. As of today, we have 650 Georgia county sheriff patches in our collection.
The constitutional and statutory authority of the office of sheriff is statewide. This means that if someone breaks the law in one county and flees to another, the sheriff can investigate the offense anywhere within the state, make the arrest, and bring the defendant back to the original county.
In addition to criminal prosecution, they enforce all trials and court orders, receive, transport and detain detainees for court, collect taxes and perform numerous other tasks.
There are two agencies in Georgia were police department and the local sheriff’s office merged together: Macon-Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the Augusta-Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

In Hawaii gibt es keine Sheriffs, aber stellvertretende Sheriffs, die in der Sheriffs Division des Hawaii Department of Public Safety (DPS) arbeiten. Hawaii ist der einzige Bundesstaat ohne eine offiziell benannte staatliche Polizeibehörde.

There are 5 counties in the state of Hawaii. As of today, we have 18 Hawaii county sheriff patches in our collection.
There are no sheriffs in Hawaii but deputy sheriff’s serve in the Sheriff’s Division of the Hawaii Department of Public Safety (DPS). Hawaii is the only state without an officially named State Police Department.
The Sheriff’s Division’s jurisdiction covers the entire state. They are responsible for security of the Hawaii State Capitol, law enforcement at Hawaii’s Airports, prisoner transportation, the processing and serve of court orders and warrants and the patrol of certain roads and waterways in alliance with other agencies.
With effect from January 1, 2024, the “Ministry of Public Security” (PSD) was renamed the “Ministry of Corrections and Rehabilitation” (DCR). All law enforcement personnel, including the “Sheriff's Division” (SD) and the “Narcotics Enforcement Division” (NED), transferred to the newly created “Department of Law Enforcement” (DLE).

Er verhindert und unterdrückt alle Unruhen, Ruhestörungen und Aufstände, von denen er Kenntnis erlangt. Er nimmt an allen Gerichtsverhandlungen teil und befolgt die rechtmäßigen Anordnungen und Anweisungen der Gerichte. Er ist weiters für das Bezirksgefängnis und die darin befindlichen Insassen verantwortlich.

There are 44 counties in the state of Idaho. As of today, we have 169 Idaho county sheriff patches in our collection.
The sheriff is responsible for keeping the peace in his county. He arrests people who attempt to commit a public offense or are suspected of having committed one. He shall prevent and suppress all riots, breaches of the peace, disturbances and insurrections of which he becomes aware. Attend all courts and obey the lawful orders and directions of the courts. He is also responsible for the county jail and their inmates.

Der Bundesstaat Illinois besteht aus 102 Bezirken. Bis heute haben wir 518 Aufnäher der County Sheriffs von Illinois in unserer Sammlung.
Das Büro des Sheriffs konzentriert seine Strafverfolgungsbefugnisse auf die nicht eingemeindeten Gebiete innerhalb ihres Bezirks. There are 102 counties in the state of Illinois. As of today, we have 518 Illinois county sheriff patches in our collection.
The sheriff's office focuses its law enforcement powers on the unincorporated areas within their county. The sheriff’s office is responsible for the county jail, guards the courthouse, acts as the process server for court documents such as summonses and oversees evictions, even inside municipalities with their own police forces. Smaller county sheriff’s offices also serve as treasurer.
Some sheriff's offices use badges in the shape of the state of Illinois or the county they serve.

Der Bundesstaat Indiana besteht aus 92 Bezirken. Mit heute haben wir 341 Indiana County Sheriff Patches in unserer Sammlung.

There are 92 counties in the state of Indiana. As of today, we have 341 Indiana county sheriff patches in our collection.
The sheriff’s offices are divided in to two groups: the police department and the corrections or jail department. The sheriff's office also serves civil process or papers.
Indiana sheriffs are empowered to make the arrest of persons who commit an offense within the sheriff’s view, and take them before a court of the county having jurisdiction, and detain them in custody until the cause of the arrest has been investigated.
Although each county sheriff’s office is an independent agency, most of them wear the “Indiana five-pointed star” patches.

Bezirken. Mit heutigem Tage haben wir 191 Iowa County Sheriff Abzeichen in unserer Sammlung.
Gemäß dem staatlichen Gesetz legt die Iowa State Sheriffs' and Deputies' Association die Uniform- und Fahrzeugstandards für alle 99 Bezirke fest. Daher sind alle Uniformen und Fahrzeugbeschriftungen im gesamten Bundesstaat Iowa gleich, mit Ausnahme des Namens des jeweiligen Bezirks auf den Brustabzeichen, Schulterabzeichen und Fahrzeugbeschriftungen.
Die Abzeichen-Nummern für Sheriffs und Deputies bestehen aus einer vorangestellten Nummer, die die County-Nummer darstellt, gefolgt von einer ein- bis dreistelligen Nummer, die die Nummer des Sheriffs oder Deputies innerhalb der jeweiligen Dienststelle darstellt. Die Abzeichen-Nummer des Sheriffs in jedem Bezirk ist immer die Nummer 1. Der Sheriff von Bremer County hätte also eine ID-Nummer von 9-1 (9 ist die County-Nummer für Bremer County und 1 ist die Nummer des Sheriffs).
"52 weeks 50 states" – let’s start into week 15 with the state of Iowa. There are 99 counties in the state of Iowa. As of today, we have 191 Iowa county sheriff patches in our collection.
In accordance with state law, the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association establishes the uniform and vehicle standards for all 99 counties. Badge numbers for sheriffs and deputies consist of a prefix number, which represents the county number, followed by a one-to-three-digit number, which represents the sheriff’s or deputy’s number within that specific office. The sheriff’s badge number in each county is always #1. So, the Sheriff of Bremer County would have an ID number of 9-1 (9 is the county number for Bremer County and 1 is the number for the sheriff).

Die Polizeibehörde von Manhattan, die Polizeibehörde von Ogden und das Büro des Sheriffs von Riley County wurden am 1. There are 105 counties in Kansas but only 104 sheriffs. There is no elected sheriff in Riley County. Manhattan Police Department, Ogden Police Department and the Riley County Sheriff’s Office consolidated on January 1, 1974 and created the Riley County Police Department. At that time, the office of the sheriff as well as all municipal police were abolished.

Kentucky sheriffs have the authority to patrol, perform court duties and collect taxes on real and personal property.
One of the main differences between Kentucky sheriff’s and sheriffs in other states is that in most counties Kentucky sheriffs do not run the county jail. County jails are run by a separate elected official called a jailer who has the authority to employ deputy jailers. The sheriff’s office, however, may be asked by the jailer to assist with jail security in the event of an emergency.

In all counties (expect for Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George’s), the county sheriff is the primary law enforcement agency including court duties.
In Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George’s the sheriff’s office their duties are strictly limited to enforcing orders of the court except in rare instances were called upon by the county police or other law enforcement to assist.
Baltimore City and Baltimore County each have an elected sheriff.

One of the most recognizable administrative duties is to serve as the county's jailor, except in any county in which there is a jointly owned jail. Another duty of the sheriff is to “have charge of the courthouse.” The sheriff is also charged with several bookkeeping and record-keeping duties and submitting a budget for his office to the Board of Supervisors.

Schlüsselloch-Abzeichen, wie auf dem ersten Bild abgebildet, wurden von verschiedenen Sheriff-Abteilungen im Bundesstaat Missouri getragen. Der Abzeichen-Hersteller musste daher nur den Namen des Bezirks hinzufügen und nicht das gesamte Abzeichen neugestalten. Dies war sehr effektiv und hielt die Anschaffungskosten niedrig - einfach und schlicht.

The sheriff operates the jail and is responsible for maintaining public safety and order in the county.
Keyhole patches were worn by various sheriff departments in the state of Missouri. The patch manufacturer therefore only had to add the name of the county and not redesign the entire patch. This was most effective and kept acquisition costs low - simple and unpretentious.

All 56 Montana sheriffs are responsible for general law enforcement and the county jail. In larger cities sheriff’s offices perform mainly judicial duties.
They can also enforce all state laws, more than any other law enforcement officer in the state of Montana (fish and game violations, department of transportation regulations, and department of livestock).

Der Bundesstaat Nebraska besteht aus 93 Bezirken. Ab heute haben wir 211 Nebraska County Sheriff Patches in unserer Sammlung.
Alle Sheriffs sind für allgemeine Strafverfolgungsaufgaben in Gebieten zuständig, die nicht von der örtlichen Polizeibehörde abgedeckt werden. Mit Ausnahme der Bezirke, in denen die Bezirksverwaltung für Justizvollzug (County Board of Corrections) existiert und die Verantwortung für das Bezirksgefängnis übernommen hat, ist der Sheriff für das Bezirksgefängnis verantwortlich.
Das grüne Standardabzeichen auf dem zweiten Bild wurde von verschiedenen Sheriff-Büros im Bundesstaat Nebraska getragen. Die Stickerei musste somit nur den Namen des Bezirks ändern und nicht das gesamte Abzeichen neu gestalten.

There are 93 counties in the state of Nebraska. As of today, we have 211 Nebraska county sheriff patches in our collection.
All sheriff's offices are responsible for general law enforcement duties in areas not covered by the local city police department. With the exception of counties where a County Board of Corrections exists and has assumed responsibility for the jail, the Sheriff is in charge for the jail.
The standard green patch in the second picture was worn by various sheriff departments in the state of Nebraska. The embroidery company therefore only had to change the name of the county and not redesign the entire patch.

Im Bundesstaat Nevada gibt es 16 Bezirke und 1 bezirksfreie Stadt (Las Vegas/Clark County). Bis dato haben wir 144 Nevada County Sheriff Abzeichen in unserer Sammlung. 
Die Sheriffs und ihre Deputies haben die Aufgabe, den Frieden in ihren jeweiligen Bezirken zu wahren. Sie sind für die Zustellung von Schriftstücken in Zivil- und Strafsachen zuständig und können bei der Festnahme von Personen wegen eines Verbrechens oder eines Landfriedensbruchs die Polizei ihres Bezirks zur Unterstützung hinzuziehen.
Der Sheriff hat die Aufsicht über das Bezirksgefängnis und die darin befindlichen Gefangenen und ist für die Rettungsaktionen in seinem Bezirk zuständig.
Abzeichen in Form des Bundestaates wie auf dem Bild ersichtlich, wurden von zahlreichen Sheriffbüros im Bundesstaat Nevada getragen.

The sheriffs and their deputies are responsible for keeping the peace in their respective counties. They are responsible for the service of documents in civil and criminal matters and may call in the police of their county to assist in the arrest of persons for a crime or breach of the peace.
The sheriff has custody of the county jail and the prisoners therein and is in charge for search and rescue operations in his county.
Patches in the shape of the state, as shown in the picture, were worn by numerous sheriff's offices in the state of Nevada.

Sheriffs have existed in New Hampshire since 1840, who are elected every 2 years and are the chief law enforcement officers in their county. The Sheriff is responsible for patrol and court services, civil process, transportation of prisoners, and criminal and civil warrants.

Sheriffs are responsible for providing security for judges, courthouse employes and the public, transporting defendants to and from jail to attend court hearings and trials, serving legal process, enforcing civil judgements, and conducting foreclosure.
In some counties, the sheriff's office is administering the county jail. In other counties it rests with a separate corrections department.
